I can’t deny that I was a bit nervous on the morning I started as an intern at Gillespie Macandrew. However, those nerves were virtually swept away as soon as I walked through the door by just how welcoming everyone at the firm is, and I was immediately made to feel like one of the team. This has made my time here fly by.

I have spent four weeks in the Private Client team and as I think back it’s hard to describe a typical day as each one has been very different! That may sound like a bit of a cliché, but a range of unique tasks and varied queries from clients ensures that there‘s always something different to do and learn. The internship has also provided a lot of hands-on drafting experience of both Wills and Powers of Attorney, helping with the management of Trusts and even one case of helping with the administration of an estate - which actually made me think of an episode of Heir Hunters!

My summer internship also allowed the chance to sit in on several client meetings (including one trip up to the Morningside office) which provided an insight into a very different side to the law than what you get whilst studying at university.

The whole experience was enhanced by the focus on training throughout. This included various training events held by different teams from the firm which provided a valuable insight into life as a Gillespie Macandrew solicitor beyond the Private Client team. Additionally, on a day to day basis everyone is always keen to answer any questions and provide feedback on any work you have done, which allows you to be confident when given the responsibility to do tasks yourself, and this ensures that you will learn something from them.

The whole experience has been made even more enjoyable by how sociable a firm Gillespie Macandrew is. Whether it’s Friday night drinks, evenings at the Fringe or even opportunities to play in the firm’s sports teams, there is always something going on! It’s hard to summarise my time at Gillespie Macandrew, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it, learnt a lot about the law in practice and I’m now certainly looking forward to the next stage of my legal career!
